Harry Harrison (1992) wrote a great fictional short story (Dawn of the Endless Night) that was edited into a great book called, "The Ultimate Dinosaur":

I used to have students read the story and analyze the issues (science AND social) that the story brings up. Everyone really needs this book. It has scientific essays, by many of the greats, plus great short stories (science fiction), called "speculations" and wonderful art works. It is comprehensive. It also has a good story for teaching geologic time, "Rhea's Time". I highly recommend the book.
