Dr. Linda Suskie
Executive Associate Director
Middle States Commission on Higher Education

DR. LINDA SUSKIE is Executive Associate Director Middle States Commission on Higher Education.  Previous to this, Dr. Suskie was Associate Vice President of Assessment & Institutional Research at Towson University, near Baltimore, Maryland. Prior positions include serving as Director of the AAHE Assessment Forum at the American Association for Higher Education and as a CHE Fellow at the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Her 25 years of experience in college and university administration include work in assessment, institutional research, strategic planning, and continuous improvement.

Ms. Suskie has spoken, consulted, and presented workshops on a variety of higher education assessment topics and has been an active member of numerous professional organizations and groups. Among her publications are Assessment to Promote Deep Learning (editor) and Questionnaire Survey Research: What Works. Her latest book is Assessment of Student Learning: A Common Sense Guide (Anker Publishing, 2004).

9:10 - 10:30 am -- Keynote: Getting Started with Program-Level Assessment - Linda Suskie, Executive Associate Director, Middle States Commission on Higher Education

This presentation will help you begin to develop effective plans to assess program-level student learning by preparing you to explain the four steps of the teaching-learning-assessment cycle to your colleagues and develop clear statements of expected learning outcomes for your students. While the presentation will focus on program-level assessment, the principles can be applied to general education, institutional- and course-level assessment as well.

1:00 - 2:15 pm -- Critical Thinking Rubrics - David Hunter, Associate Professor, Philosophy, Buffalo State College, SUNY

This presentation will introduce you to the assessment of critical thinking, using the new SUNY Critical Thinking Rubric. After learning the Rubric's elements and underlying rationale, you will be prepared to explain its role and defend its value to your colleagues. The presentation will also illustrate how the rubric can be used to develop assignments across the curriculum to improve the teaching of critical thinking.

2:30 - 3:45 pm -- The Assessment Toolbox - Linda Suskie, Executive Associate Director, Middle States Commission on Higher Education

After introducing you to the many tools available to assess student learning, this presentation will focus on two especially simple but effective tools: rubrics and reflective writing. You will also learn a few straightforward principles for ensuring good quality assessments.
