This sounds like a very interesting topic . Academic is certainly a technique that has all the components of a technological system. As Jacques Ellul (1964) reminds us, every system requires some level of efficacy to function well so does academic realm.

While in Seattle at a POD conference (www.podnetwork.org), I have the opportunity to listen to David Levy, a former Xerox Parc Researcher now professor at the University of Washington.   David is an emerging technoskeptic who writes and lectures about how today's students really don't want the fast pace lives that their devices bring with them.  His research is interesting and you can find out more about him with a Google search or two.   During his talk he gave a history lesson on the origins of "academic efficiency" and pointed out an article by Henry Davis Bushnell from the Atlantic Monthly, vol. 107, pg. 498-501, 1911 entitled "Educational Efficiency" (attached).  It was written as a rebuttal to a Carnegie Foundation Bulletin (No. 5) from 1910 entitled "Academic and Industrial Efficiency" that can be found in its entirety at:
