At the recent teaching breakfast several people mentioned that the requirement to get grades in quickly actually had an influence on the way they designed the final.  It seemed that professors gravitated to a short answer format whether or not they believed that that was the best assessment tool for their class. (Certainly that could be another topic!)  Given the weight that finals seem to have, I wonder if the reasons given for this necessity (grades in in X hours) really outweigh the importance of an appropriate assessment tool.

I’m sure that this topic has come up before and I wonder what some of the discussion has been, both in terms of the policy itself as well as dealing with it. Comments?
