Dear Colleagues,

in response to Janet's last mail:
Transparancy should really be our goal. And in the search for DTP's at least, we are (internally) not the most transparent... This could lead to misunderstandings. For the Outside world, I can tell you (Janet knows) all that there is an Awards Committee, SUNY-Senate wide, which evaluates the forwarded names.
However, as I look at past and present DTP's, I cannot help but notice: Hard to believe that we had really NO female teaching excellence on our campus? Did we ever forward a woman?

The first question raised by Janet is more internal, and equally difficult: Tenure and Promotion - here, transparancy was attempted in past reformulations of the Faculty Handbook - did they go through Senate? I believe our informal group to be a good forum for discussion (which the Senate is normally not) but not the right place for an official visit. That would change the intellectual climate and not lead to more transparency, but confusion.

We are a loose group with focus on teaching. If we go to far in the direction of the balacing act to include the other things we do, Service, Committees, Research, we risk to loose focus.

Wishing you ahappy semester

Achim

Tbers,
I find Jay’s question to be an important one and hope we’ll find time to discuss it. Would it be helpful to invite some one from the Promotion Tenure Committee, or should we have our own exploratory discussion at this time?

I would also be very interested to see how local standards for promotion/retention/continuing appointment might relate to the criteria for the Chancellor’s Awards and the Distinguished Professor rank. Although these awards and ranks are entirely separate from local matters of promotion and retention, it may be a logical assumption that some one who has satisfied the BoT policy requirements for promotion/retention may also have achieved many of the eligibility requirements for a Chancellor’s Award and the Distinguished rank.

Thanks
Janet

Jimmy,
All faculty are expected to demonstrate professional growth and development, which means different things in different academic disciplines (i.e. geology vs. music). How can this be conveyed effectively when it comes time for decisions on retention, promotion, tenure? Worth discussing? If so, I'll make a concerted effort to join the group on March 3 - not sure I'll be available for other dates - glaciers are calling.
Jay

I’m working on agenda items for these. If you have any ideas/issues you would like to discuss let me know. Thanks and have a great semester.
