Good question Mano,

 

I would say our challenges have covered that spectrum. Most recently we have had groups in classes that have mentally overpowered their instructors. Students that show disrespect. Students that are confrontational or have outbursts. Our counselors and dean of students are reporting higher levels of these problems. Our teachers all know 911 and our security office number, but we are thinking there are programs or learning opportunities on de-escalation of these situations.  At the meeting I just left, the group feels that these issues are growing across the college.

 

What we are looking for are development solutions to help some of our newer faculty and some senior faculty that have not had to deal with these issues before.  As a 20 year instructor, I know and advise the new faculty that I supervise how I have handled behavior, but I am sure looking for help and resources to do a more comprehensive job over the next year with development.

The word 'incivilities' covers a broad spectrum of actions from minor annoyances to major rudeness. Could you be a little more specific about what kinds of things are concerning your faculty?

If the subject of incivilities  has been beat to death I apologize. Our college over the last few years has had more and more incivility issues in the classrooms and hallways. Do any of you have faculty development resources that you use to help teachers, staff members, and leaders improve these situations.  What have you done for in-services? Teaching guides? Teaching seminars? Keynotes? Breakouts? Etc. Are there any books and resources you would suggest for students in higher education?

 

We have a behavior intervention team that is asking for professional development to help our teachers and staff members. We are looking for any help and ideas.

 

We have held breakout discussions at two in-services with no behavior expert, just dialogue. They were both packed. Additionally, we offer a Crisis Prevention Training and have two certified instructors. It just does not seem specific enough to classroom.
