Thanks for sharing this absolutely riveting story.

As some of you know, I do not automatically condemn corporate donations to an academic program.  In fact, I would love to augment the corporate scholarship program I've tried to begin for the Music Industry program.

The story you've shared about college sports, however, contains some clear description of wrongdoing on the part of some sports organizations, and perhaps on the part of some colleges and universities.  I was interested to see that the reporter, while sharing facts, also showed clear bias in his own point of view. I do not see the need, for example, to describe one of the early NCAA directors as a person who, "wore cowboy boots and a toupee. He shunned personal contact, obsessed over details, and proved himself a bureaucratic master of pervasive, anonymous intimidation. Although discharged from the Army during World War II for defective vision, Byers was able to see an opportunity in two contemporaneous scandals. "  The NCAA director may have been unattractive, but I don't understand how that increases or decreases NCAA culpability.

The main premise of the article, that college "students" who help to generate cash for the college should be paid, is an interesting idea. Would those students be employees of the college?  Would they be independent contractors?  Should we also pay the pep band that performs DURING the games?

I think we share a central commitment to offering a solid education to all registered students.  A general inquiry into how we encourage our students to spend their time outside of class would probably have beneficial results for all our majors.
I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of others on this list.

TBers,

This has little to do with the purpose of this group, but I found it so well done, I had to send it along.
