This is just stunning to see how the water builds, inexorably, moving so swiftly, overtaking everything in its path. It's shot from high ground, but toward the end of the video you can see panicked residents running for their lives. Almost as dramatic as the video is its audio track, where even if you don't speak Japanese, you can tell the people are expressing concern at the beginning, but by the end, their voices have reached a high level of panic and horror as they watch their homes washing away.

It is a free interactive mapping site, called Geokov.com (http://geokov.com<http://geokov.com/>), which has extended Google Maps functionality (customized through its API) for an improved mapping capability and incorporation of topographic maps and environmental data.
· Students can take a virtual field trip through the map maker to explore landforms and terrain features on topographic map and Google Earth.
·

o It is possible to import and combine spatial data and conveniently make maps for field-trips, presentations, educational materials, student reports, and posters without the knowledge of GIS or the need for specific software.
· The interactive map makes it very easy to add symbols/icons, draw on the map, and create shaded-relief topo maps of any region.
· There is a comprehensive coverage of topographic map education - and some fundamentals of mapping and spatial data such as projections, datums, and scale.
· KML, GPX, WMS and GEORSS data can be combined from different sources to produce a map mashup.
· Garmin GPS can be directly connected to Google Maps for import and export of GPX data.

Challenges Facing Today’s Students

Suggested by

Jean McMahon

Description

Here is a rather depressing, frightening view of the challenges facing today’s students. As teachers, we can be beacons of hope, enthusiasm, and reassurance, counteracting these claims. The next feature, “Caine’s Arcade” contrasts the message below.

“I know that my students have many things 'given' to them, but I sometimes stop and think about some of the reassurances that I experienced as a child that these kids have never known.

The ages of my students means that : they were 'babies' for 9/11 and have grown up in a 'terror-conscious' world and they have been trained to assume: that 'someone' is going to abduct them and abuse them on their way to school that climate change is going to have severe consequences, but no 'adults' are doing anything about it.

That there is no civil and effective discourse in our nation's capitol
that 'truth' is unimportant; it's spin that counts.

That they will have less than their parents do (education, money, opportunity, freedom, peace) that children are expendable.

That only beautiful, thin people are important.

That there are no 'truths' and 'science isn't sure' and maybe all the cool stuff (moon landing) are just hoax.

That paychecks are more important than people that drugs, sex and alcohol are so insanely accessible and that people (TV, etc) expect them to use all three.

That scandals means you were caught; but there is almost no bar to bad behavior.

That spiritual and religious beliefs are stupid.

That old people go to nursing homes.

That if you are terminally ill, someone should pull the plug.

That you are in many ways more isolated as a human being than has ever happened before in history, even though: you have no privacy; expect no privacy; deserve no privacy.”
