Subject: [fact2] FW: Coursera 2016 Request for Proposals

Greetings SUNY Community,
As part of the MOOC landscape, SUNY is now entering its third year as a University System Partner with Coursera.

We have learned much from our pioneering SUNY MOOC teams as they have helped to "tame the wild west" in educational delivery methods. Coursera has piloted pedagogical and financial support to assist with content creation coupled to their request for proposals (RFP's), while allowing campuses to continue to develop and propose content important for meeting learner objectives.

Coursera has just released two RFP "wish lists" of content they hope to attract from their partners, as well as timelines for responding to the RFP, and the pedagogical supports available. You may view these documents in the SUNY Learning Commons Coursera Development Space<http://commons.suny.edu/groups/suny-coursera-course-development/> (a.k.a. the "MOOCshake"). Please note that these documents are marked "Coursera Confidential." You are welcome to share these among SUNY Colleagues, but Coursera requests that we do not post them on public websites or share with other MOOC platform providers.

The SUNY pioneers who have invested in these courses are now beginning to realize revenue for their efforts (University at Albany's Governance of Nonprofit Organizations, Empire State College's Building a Personal Career Brand, and Stony Brook University's Introduction to Computational Arts). Several more courses have been migrated to the "on demand" platform and are serving thousands of global learners!

Coursera works on an aggressive timeline. The first deadline to submit a pre-proposal for a specialization has been moved back (from the RFP cited date) to Feb. 5th. To be clear, a pre-proposal functions as a "placeholder" for an idea. Any campus may submit one, but please CC [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> should you choose to submit a pre-proposal.

The greatest challenge SUNY is facing is to ensure we are meeting the contractual requirements to review content in an iterative fashion. To support this review process, we have:

* Created a community of practice to support each other's efforts across the system (MOOCshake)

* Designated SUNY liaison in place to funnel and refine efforts between campuses and Coursera partner support

* Produced a number of support documents outlining roles and responsibilities, timeline expectations, etc., to ensure clarity in how to escalate various development issues within SUNY or on campus.

Over the coming months, we will build upon the "lessons learned" (both from within SUNY and from other large public U.S. higher education systems) and will introduce some new practices designed to assist campuses with MOOC development while ensuring alignment with our Coursera partnership. This will include:

* Recommendations for Coursera and Campus Revenue Share from the "SUNY Pioneers"

* A more refined development and review process to ensure smooth "on ramping" to Coursera - whether an individual course, specialization or project based course.

* An application proposal process to ensure foundational support is in place at the campus level before submitting a pre-proposal to Coursera through SUNY.
