Hello all!

 

Welcome back! I hope that the semester is starting off well and you are able to have lots of interactions with your students.  We are continuing to expand the Teaching Breakfast/Coffee Chat conversations by alternating weekly between the two options: Coffee Chat on Wednesday afternoons and Teaching Breakfast on Thursday mornings.  We will continue to meet both in person and virtually, so if you feel comfortable participating in person, come on down; if you would rather meet via Teams, hop on your computer!  These spaces will continue to be a place to come together to talk about new modalities you might be using to teach and hopefully share and get a few answers. This week we will be holding our Teaching Breakfast:

 

Our reading for this week explores specific strategies for getting students more involved in class discussions. 

  1. How to Hold a Better Class Discussion – This article from the Chronicle of Higher Education has 7 strategies for changing class norms around discussions.  I appreciate that the article also addresses Why discussions matter and some of the norms around class discussions.  It also explores both in-person ideas as well as online tools, so would be good for all classes on our campus. 

 

We look forward to hearing how you create meaningful discussion for your students in classroom and questions you have around these skills.  We hope to see you on Thursday morning for Teaching Breakfast (September 1) if you can make it!

 

Also, we wanted to let you know that in lieu of meeting for Coffee Chat next Wednesday, September 7, we will be attending the opening day events for the Center for Racial Justice and Inclusive Excellence (CRJIE).
