With Global Literacy now one of the 3 core competencies for SUNY Oneonta's General Education Program, we thought it would be good to explore different way to support intercultural awareness and global learning.

  1. This article from The Ed Advocate lists 6 different practices you can use in the classroom to help students be more culturally aware: 6 WAYS TEACHERS CAN FOSTER CULTURAL AWARENESS IN THE CLASSROOM It does a good job of talking about intercultural awareness both for those who might feel outside the dominant culture as well as for those that are not as aware they are a part of the dominant culture.
  2. This article from the Chronical of Higher Education reports of different ways to create meaningful experiences through global learning activities:  Global Learning Provides Students with Meaningful Experiences.  The article is in response to prior article exploring how to reinvigorate education for students.

For our conversation we will explores some of the different ways faculty are creating global learning experiences for their students and how thinking about your teaching through an intercultural lens can support all students in your classroom.   Additionally, we can explore ways to incorporate COIL (Collaborative Online International learning) projects as a way to support global literacy.  The SUNY Oneonta COIL initiative helps connect students in the classroom with students from around the world through digital interactions.

The Talking Teaching discussions are a space to connect and talk about what's new in the world of teaching and learning.  Each session will have a focus on a specific topic but can also be a space to talk about what is happening in the classroom and identify new modalities to explore.  This is our new iteration of the Teaching Breakfast.

We will continue to meet both in person and virtually, so if you feel comfortable participating in person, we'd love to have you in the room; if you would rather meet via Teams, join from your computer.   These sessions will continue to be a place to come together to talk about teaching and hopefully share a few questions and get a few answers.

Join us in person in the Oneonta Room, room 126 (just past the Experiential Learning Center on the first floor of Hunt Union) or virtually in the Talking Teaching teams space.

We look discussing ways to help your students be more confident with their own learning in your classroom.  We hope to see you on Thursday morning for Talking Teaching (February 8) if you can make it!
