I would say it suggests rather that we should be providing important and varied ways for students to engage with material and demonstrate application in meaningful contexts. Showing them why still doesn't justify NOT providing the best way to retain and transfer knowledge, which is to engage in applying it in ways that are meaningful to the student and effective in demonstrating knowledge.
Of course why is important in setting the context.

Yes, it IS a good read. IT suggests to me that we need to find better ways to help students learn by showing them the reason (other than a test grade) that we are requiring our course content. Would you agree?
