Bill and Jim,
You are right - a discussion gorup would help, and I was not too happy about the level of discussion we had in the Senate; I hear the chairs had a better meeting - they have been better informed. Fear among the faculty is generated out of lack of information.
Currently, as I see it, the following is going to happen:

*
        GEAR guidelines are on slow burner, since SYSTEM admin has not analyzed our responses (our own repsonse was a list of good questions coming from the chairs). Realistically, the SUNY-deadline for implementation in the enxt year is in question; but Assessment issues are not going to disappear. The process is on hold until the criteria are clear.

* The criteria will be established by a committee that has just been formed - our own Gwen Crane is part of it: 3 areas have to be determinded, writing, critical thinking and math.
* What needs to be discussed now: which one of the GEAR options would we choose, and what would it mean for our campus?

Ultimatedly, we should decide not what we are are doing or can do, but what do we want the typical Oneonta graduate to know (in those fields), and how will we best assess it a)adequatedly and b)without too much intrusion into our coursework.

Betreff: GEAR Discussion Forum?

Tbers,

Do you think it would be constructive to establish an electronic discussion
forum on GEAR? There is a web site for GEAR at
http://www.cortland.edu/gear/
But I don't see any forum for open discussion about it. What do you think?
